Expectation: A strong belief that something will happen
Most of us spend very little time considering, much less examining or questioning, our expectations. There are times when that works well for us:
• I expect my paycheck not to bounce.
• I expect my Big Mac will taste the same today
as the one did last time.
• I expect my car to start when I turn the key or
push the ignition button.
However, other expectations can wreak havoc in our lives- frustrating us, angering us, hurting us:
• I expect my kids to listen to me and do what I say.
• I expect my husband to pay attention to me.
• I expect to come home to a clean house.
• I expect my employees to show up on time and get to work.
Do any of those sound familiar? Expectations can often be hidden from us, we accept them as truth without looking at them.
Let’s spend an hour unpacking some of the “perils of expectations” that might be impacting you and your relationships.
